Hybrid Powered Foiling Passenger Ferries
Next generation electric, hydrogen, hybrid powered foiling and semi foiling ferries.
HullWell is working with the designers, builders, and operators of New Zealand’s next breed of Electric, Hydrogen, Hybrid-powered foiling, and semi-foiling ferries.
Project + Year
New Zealand produced hybrid powered Foiling | Semi-Foiling Passenger Ferries. Expected launching and commissioning in 2024.
Project Information
Three New Zealand companies have high-speed foiling and semi-foiling monohull and multihull passenger ferries in the development and manufacturing phases.
The ferries will operate in harbour, coastal and offshore environments. The vessels are highly sensitive to weight for optimum performance.
Durability, resistance to impact damage, and resistance to erosion in high speed | high turbulence operating environments are required to minimise out-of-service incidences.
A very low coefficient of drag is required to optimise energy use and maximise speed.
Vessel components must align with the environmental objectives of designers, builders, operators, and other stakeholders
Hull Substrate
Aluminium
Carbon fibre + Composites
Coatings Proposed
CK 426 Ceramic Infused Two-Part Epoxy Anticorrosive + Barrier Coating (DFT: 300 microns).
Coppercoat Superyacht Multi-Season Antifoul Coating (DFT: 300 microns).
Selection Criteria
Minimum drag surface. Minimum weight per m2 coating.
Non-porous to prevent water absorption and increase in coating weight component.
Hard and durable finish with high resistance to impact and abrasive damage.
Non-eroding to prevent coating depletion on foils, leading edges, and areas subject to high turbulence.
A minimal number of coating types and chemical fusion between coatings to eliminate coating delamination risk.
Highly effective and long efficacy fouling prevention.
Two-part epoxy long efficacy hull substrate protection.
Minimal maintenance requirements.
Does not require replacement at frequent intervals.
Non-eroding to prevent discharges of toxins, biocides, silicon or plastics into the marine environment.
Solvent-free to eliminate VOC discharges and their impact on ocean acidification.
