Clipper Yacht Race

Clipper Round the World Yacht Race 2023/24.

Clipper Race Yacht

“After the twelfth edition of the race finished in July 2022, the eleven yachts had each sailed 40,000 nautical miles in extreme heat and freezing temperatures. To prepare for the 2023-24 race, our team will spend 35,000 man-hours stripping out, inspecting, replacing, repairing, maintaining, cleaning, testing, and recommissioning the yachts and their components”.

Coppercoat was applied to each yacht in 2019. It has performed really well and doesn’t need replacing. Each of the hulls will have a light burnish and that is all that is required for the 2023-24 race”.

Justin Haller - Chief Engineer, Clipper Fleet.

  • 2022/2023. Preparation of 11 Clipper 70 Race Yachts for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race 2023-24

Project + Year

Project Information

  • The Clipper Yacht Race was established in 1996 by Sir Robin Knox Johnston to allow any person regardless of previous sailing experience to embrace the thrill of ocean racing. It is the only event of its kind for amateur sailors who are led by a professional skipper

  • The 2023-24 edition of the race will be the fifth circumnavigation for each of the identical Clipper 70 fleets

  • Prior to Coppercoat antifoul coating being applied to the pandemic-affected 2019-20 race fleet, each of the eleven yachts required its ablative antifouling to be replaced at the race halfway stopover in Sydney Australia i.e., after 20,000 nautical miles

  • At the completion of the 2023-24 race, the Coppercoat surfaces will have covered more than 80,000 nautical miles

Hull Substrate

  • Carbon Fibre

Coating Selection

  • Coppercoat Multi-Season Antifoul Coating

Selection Criteria

  • Minimum coefficient of drag

  • Prevention of biofouling in tropical and near-freezing waters

  • High durability and resistance to abrasive and impact damage

  • Two-part epoxy composition to provide ultimate substrate protection

  • Non-porous to eliminate additional friction and weight

  • Long efficacy and minimum maintenance requirements to perform for two or more circumnavigations

  • Cost benefits within a single round-the-world race and spanning several round-the-world races

Coating Performance

  • Coppercoat has met each selection criteria for the 2019-20 race and with minimal maintenance between races, will again perform for the eleven-boat fleet in the 2023-24 edition of the Clipper Round the World Race
